Play it South Asian style

South Asian kids will stop whatever they’re doing for these two team games:

Cricket

Cricket is by far the most popular game across South Asia, in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. If you’ve never seen it played before, it’s a little bit like baseball. The “batsman” tries to hit the small leather ball pitched by the “bowler” to score “runs,” just like in baseball.

The game is also popular and Britain. In fact, it was originally brought to South Asia by British colonialists.

Though most kids in South Asia don’t have the proper equipment, they’ll improvise with a stick as a bat and play whenever and wherever they can.

Kabaddi

An active team game played by kids all over South Asia that’s like a cross between tag, capture the flag and red rover. It can be played by a large group of people and is most often played casually at family gatherings.

You’ll know if you’ve stumbled across a game of kabaddi (pronounced kuh-buhd-di) because players must chant loudly whenever they cross to the other team’s side. This chant is different depending on what country you live in. In Bangladesh, where kabaddi is the national sport, players chant “hadudu” as they run.
