West Africa
If a village doesn’t have the basics of development, like clean drinking water and a clean place to go to the bathroom, then that village is in need of sustainable development. People need these basics to be able to stay healthy and focus on other important things, like going to school.
West Africa Sustainable Development Facts
- In Niger, a country nearby to Sierra Leone, fewer than half of people have access to clean water.
- In Sierra Leone, almost two thirds of the population doesn’t have access to a clean place to go to the bathroom.
Another part of sustainable development means people helping each other. O Ambassadors are helping people in West Africa. This is called a “global partnership.”
Slums
In Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, thousands of people live in slums. In fact, slums can be found all over West Africa and the world. In slums, millions of people live close together in poor houses, usually without things like running water, electricity or schools. Slums are not sustainable because people who live in them can’t be healthy.
