South Asia
In South Asia, one in every three children is not in school. Many of these children are girls.
When families are poor, they can’t afford to send their children to school. Some will scrape enough money together to put at least one child in school.
If the family has a son and a daughter, they will often pick the son. The girl will then have to help at home until she gets married and moves away with her husband.
Another reason that many children don’t get an education is that they don’t have any schools in small villages and other rural areas. This is especially true in places like Sri Lanka, where many schools have been damaged by war or the tsunami.
South Asia Education Facts

- Fourteen percent of Indian children are working as child laborers instead of going to school. This is more than any other country in the world.
