Hola! My name is Anka and this is my friend Naira. Welcome to our home, Latin America.
The games we play in Latin America are pretty similar to the games you probably play in your hometown. These two games are my friends’ favorites. If you ever visit our village, we’ll show you the special ways we give these games a Latin American twist.
Soccer
Almost all my friends have soccer fever. They can’t get enough of this sport. National soccer teams from Latin America have even won the World Cup in the past. Brazil has won five World Cups, more than any other team in the world!
In 2002, my country Ecuador made it to the World Cup for the first time. It was a proud moment that brought everyone together.
Volley
My best friend Yachay likes to organize matches of this game in my village. I’ll let him tell you about it.
Yachay
Volleyball is one of the most popular games in the mountains of Ecuador. We just call it “volley” and we play it a bit differently than the version you probably know about.
There are only three players on each team, the court is a lot smaller and the net is much higher. The ball is a bigger size and is quite a bit heavier than a normal volleyball—it feels kind of like a soccer ball.

In my village, we’ve built our own net out of branches and other materials we’ve found, and we try to sneak in a game whenever we have time.
