A School Where Children Feel Safe

Location
Sri Lanka

A new school in Sri Lanka gives one girl her dream.

A young girl runs playfully down the hallway of a school in the Ampara District of Sri Lanka. Outside, there is fighting. The girl hears gunshots. It’s a familiar sound.

The fighting scares the girl. So did the 2004 tsunami that washed her school away. It scared her so much that she said she would never go to a school again unless it had two floors. That way, she said, she could just run upstairs to find safety.

A lot of kids from around the world came together, fundraised and built a school.

“They built me my school,” the girl says today, her eyes wide with wonder.

In Sri Lanka, the fighting continues. But inside her school, the girl feels safe, and she will stay healthy.

1.6 billion people live without electricity.
