South Asia

People all over South Asia don’t have access to the basics of sustainable development: clean drinking water and a clean place to go to the bathroom.

Some kids in villages and cities have to drink water that’s so dirty it’s brown. The Ganges River in India is the main source of drinking water for millions of people, but it’s polluted with human waste, chemicals from factories and garbage.

South Asia Sustainable Development Facts

  • Diseases carried in dirty water cause 80 percent of all health problems in India.
  • 253 million people live in urban slums in South Asia. This means they don’t have access to proper sanitation or running water.

Slums

Slums are very common in South Asia cities. In slums, millions of people live close together in poor houses, usually without things like running water, electricity or schools. Slums are not sustainable because people who live in them can’t be healthy.

Almost half the world lives on less than $2.50 a day.
