Oprah's Angel Network
Since its beginnings, Oprah’s Angel Network has worked to inspire individuals to create opportunities that enable underserved women and children to rise to their potential. Oprah’s Angel Network supports charitable projects and provides grants to not-for-profit organizations across the globe that are a part of this vision.
Through the power of media, Oprah Winfrey has created an unparalleled connection with people around the world. As supervising producer and host of the top-rated, award-winning The Oprah Winfrey Show, she has entertained, enlightened and uplifted millions of viewers for the past two decades. Her accomplishments as a television pioneer, producer, magazine founder, educator and philanthropist have established her as one of the most respected and admired public figures today.
In a 1997 episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah invited viewers to join her in using their lives to improve the lives of others. What began as a campaign to encourage viewers to collect spare change for 150 scholarships given through The Boys & Girls Clubs of America and to volunteer time to build 200 homes for the needy with Habitat for Humanity International™ evolved into the charity known today as Oprah’s Angel Network.
Examples of Angel Network projects include:
- Awarding 184 grants totaling $14.8 million to organizations whose leaders make a difference in the lives of others through their charitable organizations
- Providing 18,000 impoverished South African children with more than $1 million worth of school supplies, including school uniforms, school shoes and school supplies
- Building a new primary school, in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, to serve 1000 boys and girls as well as serve as a model to teaching and learning through school design throughout Africa
- Working with Free The Children to build more than 55 schools in 12 countries
